Finding Her Forever Home
July 15, 2023
How one nervous rescue pup became the loudest personality in the house.
Lucy came to us a little timid and unsure — ears back, tail low, sticking close to the nearest wall in any new room. The rescue had warned us she might take a while to come out of her shell, and for the first few weeks that was exactly right. She’d flinch at sudden noises, hesitate at doorways, and watch us carefully before deciding whether to trust the moment.
Then, gradually, that started to change. First it was cautious tail wags. Then a bold decision to steal a sock off the laundry pile and parade it around the living room like a trophy. By the end of the first month, she’d fully arrived — full of opinions about squirrels, strong feelings about anyone who dared knock on the door, and absolutely no memory of ever having been shy a day in her life.
What helped
- A predictable routine, even in the first chaotic days
- Letting her approach new people and situations on her own time
- A LOT of patience with the sock thefts
We didn’t know it yet, but we’d just adopted the neighborhood’s most dedicated squirrel watch captain. Best decision we ever made.
